I just got my license last november, and decided to buy this radio as my first, at the suggestion of a friend. And so far, not disappointed with it's performance, altough the radio has it's quirks...

" k& G l; S1 k- l4 q7 i- JThe radio is adequately small and lightweight, I have to touch it to notice it's still on my belt when I go around with it. The controls are well designed and easy to use, I can put the radio on keylock with my eyes closed.  % t- p+ k) m( Y- R p0 Z$ n
j! o: B" g. ]2 W& FI only got good audio reports on local repeaters in my area, great sound, easy to listen and understand what people are saying when using the radio. The speaker is also adequate, voices sound "full", not tinny when receiving... Of course, if the other station is far away, the radio only can do this much... * r7 B. j6 c6 N% V4 ? a+ `

Programming and the menus are well thought out, easy to use... After fiddling with it for a few days, I could efficiently use them to alter the radio's behaviour. I had to go back to the manual a few times though, but that's understandable. - O e& e5 A/ V

A few gripes now:

First, the battery. Battery life is adequate. I can go for days at a time before recharging it, but the fact that it's a Ni-Cad is kinda annoying. Having to discharge it every time I want to recharge it to avoid the memory effect, I find a little frustrating at times. Considering batteries based on other technologies are available. Nothing that can't be arranged though... I'm ordering the Li-Ion from Maha... 5 `/ V% K+ L# t9 d
. ^7 F0 j) A5 p! W$ Q; rThe belt clip is also to "rethink". I had to purchase 2 other clips because they're always broken. I'm not that rough a handler, but still... Seeing the clip used with the Yaesu HTs, Kenwood should've considered updating the design... The retaining pieces on my battery pack are also broken, so I have to find another way to bring the radio around when using it... `" T' g! i( J' e
/ d( J, }' i* T/ VIn conclusion, this radio is a good performer, ideal as a first radio. I would recommend it to anyone getting in the hobby.% W/ p3 z5 G* M3 A- g6 T6 T

Not every radio is perfect though. I'm satisfied with it and will keep it for now.. I'm considering the TH-D7A(G), since I'm looking at APRS now...( S) W- i; y" `; u8 D
